I am not trying to downplay the good things religion has done but the good things are far outweighed by bad things.
The Mormons don't believe in "poisoning your body with that shite" to quote Francis Begbie. They believe the body is a temple and this is a good thing. The Seventh day Adventists also have a similar belief. That you shouldn't poison your body. Christianity as a whole believes in charity, these are good things but the charity takes an evil twist when it comes to aids stricken Africa. When the Catholics hold a doctrine that you should not use condoms and condoms should not be distributed even in aids stricken Africa, then the doctrine of the church has an appalling human cost.
Atheists do not believe in a place called hell. Even some of the innumerable branches of Christianity do not believe in a hell as well as the Jews and a handful of other belief systems. As an atheist, I live my life to the fullest. I know its wrong to murder, and rape and steal. I don't need an ancient book to tell me these things are wrong.
I also don't need the fear of eternal torture that is described as hell, in order to scare me into doing right. I can't speak for Christians, but to me it seems as if the only thing keeping them from doing wrong is this fear of this hell fire.
Some fundamentalists go to the extreme of killing a doctor for performing abortions. And they use the bible as their backup. The bible as a moral center is laughable at best.
Slavery is condoned in the bible. We today have progressed and realize that slavery is wrong. Women's rights were non existent in the bible. Women were told to shut up and keep their faces covered. According to the bible, people who touched a woman during her menstruation are considered "unclean" due to her being in a state of "menstrual pollution". If a man so much as sits on the same chair the woman sat on during her "menstrual pollution" he will be considered "unclean". We in the 21st century have advanced and recognized women's rights. The ever changing moral zeitgeist. So claiming that the bible is a good place for morality is false and anyone making such a claim obviously hasn't read the bible carefully. The bible is filled with immorality. Rape, incest, sacrifice. Too much to mention here.
I will leave you with an interesting story from the bible. This will be the fun bible verse of the day:
After taking in a traveler, our host in the story is confronted by a mob of perverts who wish to rape the male traveler. Our gracious host offers his virgin daughter and his guest's concubine to the mob. Point #1 : the women being of far lesser value and worth than the male guest. "Please do not so vile a thing to my guest who is male but do what you wish with my virgin daughter and my guest's concubine". The mob refuses the daughter, but accepts the concubine and they "abuse her all night." The next morning she crawls back to the doorstep and dies. The traveler puts her dead body on a donkey and takes it home. Then he chops the body up into twelve pieces and sends them to each of the twelve tribes of Israel. Fun and kid friendly right? :)
Judges 19:22 Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.
19:23 And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly.
19:24 Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing.
19:25 But the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.
19:26 Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man's house where her lord was, till it was light.
19:27 And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were upon the threshold.
19:28 And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an ass, and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.
19:29 And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel.
Yes its true. Don't believe me? go pick up a bible and read it for yourselves.
